People who think the system is fundamentally decent and not evil, capricious and obscene are simply those privileged enough to live above the line in which the full intensity of power is not normally directed at them.
The way people reacted to Kavanaugh ranged from full sympathy to horror to unsurprise. The strongest anti- reactions came from those with privilege but less power. The poor and disadvantaged already know everything there is to know about petty and wrathful judges like Kavanaugh.
Powerful people want Kavanagh not because they couldn’t find someone else less offensive to put in. They could have but they won’t. His repulsiveness is a feature, not a bug. There are many other potential candidates who could just as easily have done their bidding (including female candidates) but they’re going to put Kavanaugh in no matter what.
This is what weilding actual political power is all about and this is just a demonstration of how it is exercised.
