  1. David Megginson American politics is a little weird like that. I’m not exactly sure why this is, bit my guess is that it might have to do with the following:

    – Blue has always been associated with liberalism (which can mean economic liberalism of the Conservatives or social liberalism of the Progressives);

    – up until about Teddy Roosevelt or Taft, the Republican Party was the progressive party, then the “flip” happened, which completed around 1964.

  2. I think it’s even more prosaic than that. I think the Election coverage in the US used to swap red and blue between Democrats and Republicans each election, until one election (Bush II?) fixed the idea of “Red states” and “Blue states” as they were then, and the colours stuck.

    Not to be confused with a “Yellow Dog Democrat”, named because they would vote for a yellow dog if it was on the ticket as a Democrat.
