Rock against Racism started forty years ago in response to a racist onstage rant by Eric Clapton.

“I don’t want you here, in the room or in my country,” Clapton declared. “Listen to me, man! I think we should vote for Enoch Powell. Enoch’s our man. I think Enoch’s right, I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white. I used to be into dope, now I’m into racism. It’s much heavier, man. Fucking wogs, man. Fucking Saudis taking over London. Bastard wogs. Britain is becoming overcrowded and Enoch will stop it and send them all back. The black wogs and coons and Arabs and fucking Jamaicans and fucking… don’t belong here, we don’t want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don’t want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man. We are a white country. I don’t want fucking wogs living next to me with their standards. This is Great Britain, a white country. What is happening to us, for fuck’s sake?”

— Eric Clapton, Birmingham, 1976

It was the drugs, man.

In response Red Saunders, Roger Huddle and other signatories wrote in NME, Melody Maker, Sounds and the Socialist Worker.

‘Come on Eric… Own up. Half your music is black. You’re rock music’s biggest colonist… We want to organise a rank and file movement against the racist poison music… we urge support for Rock against Racism. P.S. Who shot the Sheriff, Eric? It sure as hell wasn’t you!’

For socialism and democracy.

For socialism and democracy.

Not sure if John Quiggin has changed his politics in any real way other than to recognise to failure of “social democracy” as a viable and advanceable political program. Defending technocratic capitalist rule isn’t what gets people fired up and engaged in politics.

Times change and so has the political landscape and the collapse of the political centre has created opportunities on the Left. Something we haven’t seen for five decades or more.

Moving Left is an open door. It is the only way to comprehend and oppose the array of forces currently lining up against human and environmental survival.

America, that symbol of Freedom, always knows when the genocides are going on.

America, that symbol of Freedom, always knows when the genocides are going on.

Whether that be in Indonesia, East Timor or right now in Yemen, knowledge and tacit support (and sometimes explicit support) is never far away.

This article is from 2013.

But the CIA documents, which sat almost entirely unnoticed in a trove of declassified material at the National Archives in College Park, Md., combined with exclusive interviews with former intelligence officials, reveal new details about the depth of the United States’ knowledge of how and when Iraq employed the deadly agents. They show that senior U.S. officials were being regularly informed about the scale of the nerve gas attacks. They are tantamount to an official American admission of complicity in some of the most gruesome chemical weapons attacks ever launched.

Many American whites like to imagine that there was no qualitative difference between slavery of the sort practiced on the American plantations and in ancient or traditional societies.

All slavery is horrendous and barbarous of course but any reasonable assessment of colonial and capitalist slavery was that it was the cruelest and most inhumane practice in the whole of human history. The fact that it only got worse and intensified its cruelty over its long history only goes to show why it had to be so violently destroyed.

Unfortunately it’s destruction through blood was quickly overturned by a failed Reconstruction and and the stripping of human rights from former slaves. Its legacy lives on in the racism and cluelessness of the majority of American whites to this day.

It’s based on an ignorance that actually takes work to maintain.
