This chart is a pretty good depiction of just how damaging European imperialism was to the Asian economies. The rapid post-colonial bounce back of both India and China is impressive but can also be seen at least partly as a restoration. The implications of this return to their former strengths relative to Western power is only now starting to be felt.

The other rapidly growing population zone—the African continent—is still absent from this chart. That must surely be changing.
