“Fuschia”… Intriguing.
New Zealand with its overpowered unicameral parliament became the darling of international market liberals for implementing all the tough “reforms” asked of it in the 1980s and 90s. These reforms were intended to restructure the economy and pay big dividends to New Zealanders down the track.
I suppose the bit about paying big dividends did come true, at least for the rich end of town. For everyone else, not so much. Fifty years ago, New Zealanders per capita were richer than Australians. Now they have fallen significantly behind and have a much higher income inequality which is more comparable to that of the United States. It’s still a rich country, of course, but not so great if you are on a low income.
This is pretty damn brilliant. It’s also a useful reminder of how recently political states emerged over much of the earth. There were isolated civilisations more than a thousand years ago (and some truly ancient ones in the Middle East) but with exception of Rome and Han China, they were pretty small or relatively short lived. The nucleation of political states in Northern Europe, Japan and South East Asia didn’t really get started until after 700 AD.
In the Americas there wasn’t much outside the Yucatan peninsula although I have a feeling that this map downplays pre-Inca civilisations in South America. Those people were making monumental constructions for millennia and surely these must also have been associated with political states.

Thomas Frank: Things will change between now and November, of course. But what seems most plausible from the current standpoint is a landslide for Clinton, and with it the triumph of complacent neoliberal orthodoxy. She will have won her great victory, not as a champion of working people’s concerns, but as the greatest moderate of them all, as the leader of a stately campaign of sanity and national unity. The populist challenge of the past eight years, whether led by Trump or by Sanders, will have been beaten back resoundingly. Centrism will reign triumphant over the Democratic party for years to come. This will be her great accomplishment. The bells will ring all over Washington DC.
This article seemed to generate a few negative comments from the New York Times readership.

I really should write Donald Trump a thank you letter for proving my contention that there’s no tangible difference between the Republicans and the Democrats.
