“I don’t do nuance” – George Dubya Bush

It’s worth repeating, the militarist security state and the jihadists are both working on the same side. They both want to rob your of your freedom and they both need to be opposed.

Here we go again… Another terrorist attack has happened, this time in Brussel, and it’s both sad and deeply frustrating. In many ways it makes us wonder whether we ever really move out of the dark ages.

But I want to point out what I think is the most important message here. After the similar attack in Paris Lyad El-Baghdadi tweeted that one of the stated goals of ISIS is what they call the ‘extinction of the grayzone’, in that they are actually trying to change the world so that everything becomes polarized between two extremes.

As Lyad said: “Eliminating the grayzone – the zone of coexistence – and rendering a world as black & white as their own flag. That’s what ISIS wants.”

And as you can see in the screenshot below, ISIS specifically points to George W. Bush’s doctrine of ‘them versus us’ as speaking what ISIS defines as the truth.

And today, we see the same thing. Already, xenophobic right wing politicians (and their supporters) are trying to use this attack to further their own political goals, by promoting a them versus us ideal.

In other words, the gray zone (the place of tolerance) is being destroyed from all sides. It’s being destroyed by ISIS and their terrorists, and it’s being destroyed by our own people who go to the counter-extreme with basically the same views.

What we need is neither. The future of all of us is to strengthen the gray zone of tolerance, where it’s not them versus us, where it’s not about closing borders, outlawing an entire culture or preventing integration.

ISIS and our right-wing politicians want us to be polarized, angry, and intolerant towards each other. They want us to go to the edge because that’s is what they benefit from. And we see the result of it too. All across Europe, right-wing parties are winning more and more votes, while ISIS is growing.

ISIS defines the gray zone as this scary place where Muslims and non-Muslims coexist peacefully and with mutual respect, and they are trying to do everything they can to eliminate it. But it’s the exact same rhetoric that we hear from some of our own politicians.

Obviously, ISIS needs to be stopped. They are criminals of the worst kind, violating the very principle of human rights (which is the right to exist). But we need to stop ourselves too.

The future is in the gray zone (the zone of co-existence). The place where diversity is celebrated, where different cultures and opinion are seen as a strength, where tolerance for others is what defines us.

Don’t become a xenophobic nationalist/culturalist in order to fight xenophobic nationalism/culturalism.

Actually this is more important that driverless private vehicles and simpler to achieve. What our cities really need is more public transport which is timely and efficient and has good coverage of urban areas.

Driverless Bus System Showcases Future of Public Transit – this May, not some distant future

As technology companies and automakers race to put a driverless car on the road, they might want to take a look at a small experiment being conducted in the Netherlands. WEpods, an abbreviation of Wageningen and Ede, two towns in the south-central province of Gelderland, will soon play host to a driverless bus system, ferrying dignitaries and visitors to a local university via six-passenger vehicles that look a bit like enclosed, oversized golf carts. Unlike similar autonomous transport systems currently in use, such as the Rotterdam Rivium bus or Heathrow airport shuttles, these electrically powered vehicles won’t run on dedicated tracks, instead rolling on the same roadways used by human drivers.

Unfortunately these articles are never well researched.

Unfortunately these articles are never well researched. There’s no question that Easter has pagan roots related to the Spring season but the goddess Oestre is not well established and no one really knows anything about her cult or whether she was really worshipped. The connection with the Sumerian goddess Ishtar or Inanna is incredibly tenuous and separated by huge gulfs of time and distance. The only mention of Oestre the goddess we have is from a single passage by a monk in the eighth century AD

Economic interests are often used to justify warfare but the economic cases rarely stack up. The current tensions in the South China sea have little to do with trade and much more about the needs of the United States to project power somewhere other than the Middle East (aka the pivot to Asia).
