“We have had our differences of opinions with the DNC.

“We have had our differences of opinions with the DNC. But at the end of the day, the DNC, Hillary Clinton and myself — we want to defeat right-wing extremism in this country. So we’re trying to work out our differences of opinion.”—Bernie Sanders

The issue is not so much with the Hillary camp but with the nature of the Democratic party itself. Its prime directive is to keep the progressive Left candidates out of power. In this it is not alone, the Australian Labor Party works much the same way. What has changed however is that the progressive Left has grown to become the largest faction in the party and efforts to shut it out are becoming increasingly self-destructive.

The DNC needs to find a way to accommodate its progressive faction or face a major rupture with it. Such a thing would effectively hand power to the Republicans for a long time. In a period of record unhinged wing-nuttery on the Right, that would be a horrible prospect for America and indeed the world.

I now understand what this phrase means:

America is not a democracy, it’s a constitutional republic.

It means that America is an oligarchy, i.e. rule by a small elite of wealthy people. Voters’ opinions while frequently canvassed are routinely ignored.
