Economic reporting in the UK has been so dreadful that anyone reading it would be under the impression that the Tories have been good managers of the economy. The reality is that they have been terrible but for various reasons, the people who supposedly report the news haven’t noticed.

This may have relevance in Australia as well as the longer our Tories stay in, the more the media will report their mythology rather than the facts.

In reality, conservative economic policies applied at this moment are pro-cyclical, that is contractionary during a recession and act to prolong rather than shorten the downturn. The only benefit to this kind of policy accrues to the top end of town and to those that actually want to destroy public services.

A government with a less destructive agenda could have done many things to alleviate the worst of the downturn and made it much shorter. This is not what the Tories are about.
